National award winning cinematographer PS Nivas dies

Cinematographer-director PS Nivas has died on Monday in Calicut, Kerala. The information was shared by filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan through a tweet. He is known for his work in Malayalam film Mohiniyaattam (1976) that bagged him a National Award.

“Noted Cinematographer/Director/Producer #Nivas passes away in Calicut. One of my earliest influencers. Worked in hindi, tamil & Malayalam. Best known for his work with #Bharatiraja starting with #16vayathinilae #omshanti,” Sivan tweeted.

Cinematographer-filmmaker PC Sreeram, who credits Nivas as an early influencer to his craft, also paid his last respects as he tweeted, “The man who shot 16 Vayathinile for Bharathiraja and opened up a whole new avenue of visual narration for Indian Cinema, particularly the Tamil film industry – Nivas has left us with a lot to cherish. May his soul rest in peace.”

PS Nivas started his career as a cinematographer Ashok Kumar. He is known for his work in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi cinema. Some of his most notable works include 16 Vayathinile (1977), Kizhake Pogum Rail (1978), Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), Solva Sawan (1978), Vayasu Pilichindi (1978), Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979) and Saagara Sangamam (1983).
