GST officials are now taking the help of data analytics to detect evasion in Goods and Services Tax (GST) payments and whether sufficient GST is being paid in the entire supply chain in a particular sector.
GST theft of more than one lakh crore rupees
GST evasion of more than Rs 1 lakh crore was detected in FY23 ending March 31, 2023, after which the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) started the exercise to detect evasion with immediate effect so that the matter can be brought to the notice at the earliest. can be rectified as soon as possible.
A GST official told news agency PTI that ‘end-to-end’ analytics and ‘gap analysis’ are being used to identify ‘missing links’ so that the matter can be rectified at the earliest.
Strict action will be taken if caught
After a thorough analysis, the GST department may also make some changes in the law or tariff, if required, and place it before the GST Council for approval to check evasion. The GST official said that if a case of theft comes to light in any area, strict action can be taken.
GST evasion is increasing year by year
Tax officials have observed a year-on-year increase in GST evasion and it has now increased to over Rs 1.01 lakh crore in FY 2022-23. If we talk about the financial year 2022-23, then DGGI officials have recovered Rs 21,000 crore. There have been more than 14,000 cases of GST evasion in FY 23. Whereas in 2021-22 the number of GST evasion cases was 12,574 and in 2020-21 the number of cases was 12,596.
GST evasion of Rs 3.08 lakh crore caught
In a reply to the Lok Sabha last month, the Finance Ministry said that a total GST evasion of Rs 3.08 lakh crore has been detected between July 2017 and February 2023, of which more than Rs 1.03 lakh crore has been recovered.
