Kathua Cloudburst: 7 Dead in Floods and Landslide

A heavy cloudburst in the Jodh Ghati area of the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir took the lives of five people due to flash flooding. Two other people were killed in a landslide at Janglote on the same night. These unfortunate events occurred at night, as the weekend drew to a close, with Saturday night giving way to Sunday. The landslide and flood also impacted the major infrastructures, such as a rail track, the National Highway-44, and a nearby police station. 

Damage to Infrastructure

According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, MP representing Udhampur, numerous infrastructures, including a railway track, National Highway 44, and a police station, were damaged due to heavy rains and landslides. He added that it is the civil administration and the military, along with the paramilitary, that are working hard to bring it under control.

Condolences and Government Response

The Union Minister Jitendra Singh condoled with the affected families and promised that the situation would be monitored. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was pained over the tragic loss of lives. He instructed authorities to guarantee relief and rescue, and fully supported the affected families. The Chief Minister also prayed that the injured recover soon.

Weather Advisory After Kathua Cloudburst

The Kathua administration has also issued a weather advisory for heavy to very heavy rainfall across all parts of the district. 

The citizens are strongly urged to:

  • Avoid rivers, streams, and other water bodies.
  • Avoid hilly areas prone to landslides.
  • Be cautious of other high-risk areas.
