Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, remembered for his role as a professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots, has passed away at the age of 91. He breathed his last on Monday in Thane.

Achyut Potdar Dies At 91, Last Rites Today

The exact cause of his death has not been confirmed, though reports suggest he was recently admitted to a hospital in Thane due to age-related health issues. His final rites will be performed on August 19 in Thane.

Confirming the news, Marathi channel Star Pravah shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “A heartfelt tribute to senior actor Achyut Potdar… His smile, simplicity and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”

His Popular Role In 3 Idiots And Dialogue That Made Him Viral

Potdar gained nationwide recognition for his role as a confused college professor in 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and R Madhavan. His dialogue “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho” became iconic, sparking countless memes and establishing his place in popular culture.

Achyut Potdar: Acting Journey

Interestingly, Achyut Potdar did not start his career in films. He first worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, before joining the Indian Army. Later, he moved to the corporate world with Indian Oil Company. His entry into acting came much later, at the age of 44, proving that passion has no age limit.

Over his career, Potdar appeared in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films and over 100 television shows. His film credits include Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Yeh Dillagi, Rangeela, Mritydand, Ishq, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator.

On television, he worked in popular shows such as Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj. He was also a well-known face in Marathi cinema and television, where his simplicity and natural acting made him a favourite among audiences.

Achyut Potdar’s journey from being an army officer to becoming one of the most recognisable character actors in Indian cinema is truly inspiring. His performances carried honesty, and his presence added depth to every story he was part of.
