In a tragic incident that has raised serious questions about infrastructure safety in government schools, a portion of the roof at a government secondary school in Rajasthan’s Dausa district collapsed on Wednesday, leaving one student dead and several others injured.

According to students present at the time of the incident, the warning signs were visible — yet tragically overlooked. “Pebbles started falling from the ceiling, and we got scared. But the teachers told us to sit down and continue the class,” said a visibly shaken student in a report by India Today.

The deceased student was identified as a Class 5 girl, while at least four others were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries. The incident occurred in the middle of the school day, catching both staff and students off guard.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse, and preliminary findings suggest that the school building, reportedly over 40 years old, had been in need of urgent repairs. However, maintenance work was either delayed or inadequately addressed.

The Rajasthan government has announced compensation for the victim’s family, and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for negligence. Meanwhile, education officials have been instructed to conduct safety audits of all old school buildings in the district.

This tragedy has reignited concerns over the condition of public school infrastructure across rural India. While efforts have been made in recent years to improve classroom facilities, many schools still operate in buildings that are structurally unsound.
