Indian government has blocked 25 OTT platforms for allegedly hosting obscene and vulgar content. Platforms like ALTBalaji, ULLU, Boomex, Big Shots App, and Desiflix are among those banned for showing adult content that lacked meaningful stories or social value.
Officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the banned platforms were found guilty of breaking serious laws. Many shows reportedly featured “sexual innuendos” and explicit scenes involving nudity, with some even showing inappropriate content in family or sensitive setups.
ALTBalaji, ULLU Among Platforms Banned For Obscene OTT Content
The full list of banned apps was shared on Instagram by photojournalist Viral Bhayani. He wrote, “In a major decision, the central government has now levied a ban on various apps and websites for allegedly hosting obscene, vulgar, and adult content.” Apart from ALTBalaji and ULLU, other apps named include Kangan App, MoodX, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, and NeonX VIP.
Social media users reacted quickly. A user wrote, “Pahli baar government ne sahi kaam kiya hai” Another said, “Crimes will be less now. Fingers crossed”
Some even joked about Ekta Kapoor’s ALTBalaji. One user commented, “Ekta kapoor ka moye moye.” Another wrote, “Ekta Kapoor crying in the bathroom.”
Supreme Court Had Already Raised Concerns Over OTT Adult Content
This crackdown comes after the Supreme Court, in April, had issued notices to the Centre and major OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ULLU, and ALTT. The notices were linked to a PIL seeking stricter controls on digital adult content.
The court said, “It’s not our domain, you do something,” pointing the matter to the executive. Although no formal public notice has been released yet, the ban is being seen as a strong step toward regulating digital content in India.
