Notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi is once again making headlines after Delhi Police busted an extortion racket demanding ₹25 lakh in his name. However, a fresh controversy has erupted as AAP’s National Media Incharge, Anurag Dhanda, shared a video on social media alleging that a senior Delhi Police officer referred to Bishnoi as “Sahab” during a press conference.
Police Action in Extortion Case
According to Delhi Police, three accused were arrested from Punjab for allegedly demanding extortion money from a jeweler in Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area. The accused had allegedly threatened the jeweler over phone calls and WhatsApp messages, identifying themselves as members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The complainant, who is the director of a prominent jewelry store, reported the extortion threat on August 12, leading to swift police action.
During the press briefing on the arrests, a Delhi Police officer was caught on video saying, “Is cheez ko main pramanit nahi kar sakta, lekin main bata sakta hoon ki isme jo message tha, jo call tha, us call mein Lawrence Bishnoi Sahab ka naam liya gaya tha.”
This statement quickly went viral, sparking outrage over why a dreaded gangster was being addressed respectfully as “Sahab.”
Anurag Dhanda’s Attack on Delhi Police
Sharing the video clip on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Anurag Dhanda strongly criticized Delhi Police, questioning their attitude towards organized crime. In his post, he wrote:
“Gangster ko Delhi Police ka senior officer ‘Sahab’ keh kar bula raha hai. Yeh dikhata hai ki BJP ki sarkar mein law and order ki kya haalat hai. Ek taraf aam aadmi ko police ki dhakosle mein pareshaan kiya jaata hai, doosri taraf gundayon ko izzat di jaati hai.”
Dhanda alleged that such behavior indicates a soft approach towards criminals while common citizens continue to face harassment. He demanded clarification from the Home Ministry and accountability from Delhi Police over the language used.
Political Storm Ahead
The incident has triggered political reactions, with opposition leaders questioning the credibility of Delhi Police. While police maintain that Bishnoi’s direct involvement in the extortion case is still under investigation, the controversy over calling him “Sahab” has added a political dimension to the criminal case.
