After extending GST rate cuts this festive season, the Modi government may be preparing another major surprise for central government employees and pensioners. Policy buzz suggests that the long-awaited 8th Pay Commission board could be officially constituted before the announcement of the Bihar Assembly elections, making this Diwali a double celebration for lakhs of families.
Big Announcement on the Cards
The government had earlier announced the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025, but the Terms of Reference (ToR) and the appointment of its members are still pending. Sources now indicate that the Centre is looking to fast-track the process, with the commission’s chairman and members likely to be named before Diwali or Chhath Puja.
Relief for Employees and Pensioners
The commission will undertake a comprehensive review of pay scales, allowances, and pensions for central government employees. Even the formal constitution of the commission is expected to boost morale.
RK Verma, General Secretary of the Joint Employees Council, said:
“A formal notification or board announcement itself would send a strong signal of the government’s commitment.”
For nearly 50 lakh central employees and 65 lakh pensioners, this move is being closely watched, with expectations running high that the 8th Pay Commission will bring much-needed relief amid rising costs of living.
