Karur Rally Stampede: A massive tragedy struck Tamil Nadu on September 27, 2025, when a stampede at political rally of Thalapathy Vijay in Karur left more than 38 people dead and dozens injured. The event, organised by his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has shocked the state and triggered fierce political debate.
Priyanka Chaturvedi Blames Hero Worship
Shivsena UBT leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi shared a fiery post with her opinion after the incident. In a post on social media, she wrote, “38 lives lost in this campaign stampede, the tragedy of our nation is the hero-worshipping of actors, politicians and cricketers, self-styled gurus. Hope someday Indians will realise these are false gods they have put on a pedestal.”

BJP Leader Requests Not To Sensationalise The Karur Rally Stampede Incident
Unlike Priyanka, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan urged people not to politicise the tragedy. She said that she is going to Karur to support those affected by the stampede. She assured that all necessary help, including medical aid and support for families, will be provided.
Tamilisai Soundararajan also requested people not to sensationalise the tragedy and to act sensibly. She revealed that the state president is also on the way. The Union Home Minister contacted the Chief Minister to check on the situation and offered help from the central government. The Prime Minister has expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
How The Karur Rally Stampede Occurred
Thousands had gathered from early morning, waiting under the hot sun to see Vijay. His late arrival added to the restlessness. Witnesses said people fainted from exhaustion, while many pushed forward to catch a glimpse of his convoy or the stage.
At around 7:45 p.m., near Veluswamypuram on the Karur–Erode route, the situation spiralled out of control. The crowd surged toward the barricades, causing a deadly crush. Women and children who got separated from their families were trampled. Videos showed disturbing scenes of people collapsing as others struggled to stand.
Rescue efforts faced delays as ambulances found it difficult to move through the dense crowd.
Officials confirmed that more than 38 people lost their lives, while over 50 others suffered injuries, including fractures and suffocation-related trauma. Women and children were among the victims.
Expressing grief, Vijay said, “My heart is shattered… I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
The Tamil Nadu government has promised compensation for victims’ families and has launched an investigation into the lapses that caused the tragedy.
