Bengal SIR: Battle Lines Drawn ? After Bihar, Mamta Banerjee to Come Head to Head With SIR Campaign, TMC Warns ‘Not a Single Voter Should Be… ‘

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, is strongly against the plan for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s voter rolls. Banerjee said that a move like Bihar’s NRC process would not be allowed in Bengal and that it would be seen as a threat to voter rights.

TMC Gets Ready for the Kolkata Rally

Banerjee is in charge of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is planning a big gathering in Kolkata to protest the SIR process. The gathering, which is likely to happen in the second week of November, will likely include Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, who are both national general secretaries of the party.

What is the SIR process?

The Election Commission of India started the SIR process to make sure that all of the country’s voter lists are up to date. Even though the practice is normal, the TMC says it is politically motivated and could keep real voters in Bengal from voting, which makes people even more worried about the process.

What the BJP Did

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says that TMC’s worries are just political. Leaders of the BJP say that the SIR is only meant to make sure that voting lists are correct and that it shouldn’t be politicised.

What This Means for the 2026 Assembly Elections

The upcoming gathering in Kolkata is likely to make people in West Bengal talk more about politics before the 2026 assembly elections. The SIR is expected to be a big part of the TMC’s campaign, while the BJP plans to defend it and push its story on electoral reforms.

The Battle Ahead with High Stakes

As things get worse, the SIR problem is likely to become a major political issue in Bengal. Both parties are getting ready for a very important campaign, where voter opinion and political tactics will be very important in the months before the elections.
