In a significant move under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, Indian Railways is gearing up to launch the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, the country’s first high-speed sleeper service combining speed, safety, and five-star comfort. While initially expected to debut in October 2025, the train’s rollout has been delayed due to certain design and technical improvements flagged during trials.
Safety and Comfort First
The Ministry of Railways has made it clear that no compromise will be made on passenger safety or convenience. The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) completed its safety trials in September 2025, and final approval now rests with the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS). Once approved, the train is expected to begin operations by December 2025.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper will feature India’s most advanced Kavach 4.0 safety system, fire-resistant interiors, and a superior braking mechanism. Each route will have trained technical staff ready to respond to emergencies within minutes.
Modern Design and Passenger Experience
Early trials revealed minor flaws — including sharp berth edges, inconvenient curtain handles, and dust-prone connectors — which are now being fixed before the official launch. The final design will include ergonomic sleeping berths, controlled temperature systems, noise insulation, and automatic lighting.
Five-Star Hotel on Wheels
Dubbed as a “five-star hotel on wheels,” the train will offer reading lights, power charging points, and plush bedding in first-class compartments. Passengers can also expect smoother rides at speeds of up to 180 km/h, ensuring faster long-distance travel with luxury-grade comfort.

Next Steps
Once the CCRS approval comes through, the Railways will begin phased operations, with select routes to be announced soon. Each railway zone has been instructed to prepare maintenance facilities and staff training programs ahead of the launch.
