In a major decision aimed at strengthening the spirit of patriotism and national pride among students, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that singing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be made compulsory in all educational institutions across the state.
The announcement was made during the ‘Ekta Yatra and Collective Singing of Vande Mataram’ program held in Gorakhpur on November 10, 2025. Addressing the event, CM Yogi said that the initiative would help nurture respect for India’s cultural heritage and values among the younger generation.

He stated, “Every student must feel pride in the nation’s unity and diversity. The recitation of ‘Vande Mataram’ will awaken a sense of belongingness and duty towards the motherland.” The Chief Minister added that schools and colleges are not just centers of learning, but also institutions that shape responsible citizens who must stay connected to the nation’s roots.
Officials from the Department of Education have been directed to issue circulars ensuring implementation in both government and private institutions, starting with morning assemblies. The decision will also apply to universities and technical colleges across the state.

In the past few years, initiatives such as Yoga education, Sanskrit promotion, and heritage awareness programs have been introduced to align academics with traditional Indian values.
CM Yogi further said that such steps are not merely symbolic but serve as powerful instruments in building a generation that values unity, respect, and social harmony. He noted that “Vande Mataram” has been a timeless symbol of India’s freedom struggle and continues to inspire millions even today.
The program in Gorakhpur witnessed a massive turnout of students, teachers, and citizens, who participated with great enthusiasm. The air reverberated with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, reflecting a collective sentiment of national pride and solidarity.
Education experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a positive step toward reconnecting the youth with India’s patriotic traditions. The move also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages value-based education and holistic development of students.
