Second Vande Bharat Sleeper Rake Arrives in Mumbai for Crucial Trial Run

The newly arrived rake pulled into Mumbai Central around 3.15 pm on Friday. It is scheduled to depart on Saturday morning for further dynamic trials.

Mumbai on Friday received the second 16-coach rake of the sleek, semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express sleeper train — a modern upgrade to the existing Train 18 chair-car fleet. The rake travelled from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Mumbai Central as part of an ongoing series of trial runs.

Successor to Train 18 Under Trials Since January

The prototype version of the sleeper Vande Bharat, originally envisioned as “Train 20,” has been undergoing extensive tests since January 2025. Trials have been conducted across various terrains and climatic conditions to ensure performance stability and passenger safety.

Railway officials confirmed that during testing in the Kota division, the train successfully touched a top speed of 180 kmph, marking a major milestone in India’s semi-high-speed railway development.

New Aerodynamic Features for Smoother Rides

Equipped with an aerodynamic nose cone designed to minimise drag, the train also features advanced suspension systems to enhance ride comfort, especially during overnight travel. Engineers say the improved design will significantly cut noise and vibrations inside the compartments.

Public Rollout Expected by Mid-2026

The newly arrived rake pulled into Mumbai Central around 3.15 pm on Friday. It is scheduled to depart on Saturday morning for further dynamic trials. Officials stated that once all safety and performance checks are complete, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be introduced for public use by mid-2026.
