Deepika Padukone has had one of the most successful careers in Indian cinema. From her debut in Om Shanti Om (2007) to recent pan-India hits like Kalki 2898 AD, she has proven her box-office appeal. Yet, in a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, Deepika admitted that not all her choices over 18 years were perfect.

Deepika Padukone Regrets Some Of Her Film Choices

The actress said, “The only non-negotiable is authenticity. Anything that doesn’t feel true to me doesn’t cut. Sometimes people offer a lot of money and think that’s enough, but it isn’t. And the reverse is also true. Some things may not be commercially big, but I believe in the people or the message, and I’ll stand by it.”

Deepika also reflected on how her approach has evolved. She added, “Was I always this clear? Maybe not. But I’ve reached that clarity now. Do I sometimes look back and think – What was I thinking? Of course. That’s part of learning. Maybe 10 years from now, I’ll question some of today’s choices. But right now, they feel honest.”

Deepika’s Film Journey

Deepika’s career began with a bang, starring opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. Her early career had ups and downs. In 2012, Cocktail marked a turning point. Her performance as Veronica earned critical praise. She followed it with hits like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Chennai Express (2013) and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013).

Films like Piku (2015) and Bajirao Mastani (2015) further established her as a strong performer who could deliver both commercial success and acting depth. Next blockbusters include Padmaavat (2018), Pathaan (2023) and Jawan (2023).

However, Deepika has also faced setbacks. Early films such as Chandni Chowk to China (2009), Karthik Calling Karthik (2010), and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) did not perform well. Critics cited weak scripts and limited audience appeal.

More recently, Chhapaak (2020) received praise for its story and Deepika’s performance. However, it failed commercially. Experts say its serious subject and controversies restricted its reach.

Deepika Padukone: Upcoming Projects

Deepika has several films in the pipeline. She will appear in Shah Rukh Khan’s action film King, directed by Siddharth Anand. The cast includes Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Rani Mukerji. The film is set to release in April 2026.

She will also work with director Atlee on his untitled Allu Arjun-starrer, tentatively called AA22xA6, scheduled for release in 2027.
