On CM Bhagwant Mann orders, the Police Department of Punjab intensified actions (including targeted raids/similar operations) throughout Punjab, targeting areas known for drug activity. As a result of these actions, large amounts of illegal drugs have been seized, and many arrests have been made. In addition to punishing offenders, the actions taken by the police are also intended to severely disrupt the supply chain of illegal drugs. By taking these actions, the police have made it clear that no illegal substances will be tolerated within the state of Punjab and have provided a secure environment for all citizens of the State.
Making Our Youth Aware
In addition to enforcement, educating the young population on the potential dangers of substance use/abuse is critical to fighting drug abuse. The #NashaMuktPunjab (Drug Free Punjab) awareness initiative has commenced an educational program in schools, colleges, and communities to inform our youth about these dangers through workshops, rallies, and interactive sessions held by instructors from various educational institutions. In addition, media campaigns are currently being conducted throughout the State to further disseminate this information to both students and community members so that they can better identify drug use and remain vigilant against all forms of substance misuse.
Community Engagement & Positive Outcomes
The initiative’s early findings appear very positive, with data from local government reporting a decline in drug-related incidents within the areas that have integrated law enforcement operations and community awareness initiatives into their operations. To this end, a large amount of the initiative’s success has stemmed from the involvement of community partners, who have engaged with law enforcement as well as other community partners (NGOs and health professionals) to assist with providing ongoing education, as well as counselling/rehabilitation services to the community. As demonstrated by the initiative’s success, combining both strong law enforcement efforts with strong community involvement provides one of the most significant ways to create a significant, long-term impact.
