Auto Industry: India Shining Bright! 2M to 28 M, Country Becomes Third-Largest Global Automobile Market, What it Means?

Auto Industry: India has surpassed Japan to become the world’s third largest automobile market.

According to latest data, 3.143 million vehicles were exported by India between April-September 2025. Production of automobiles went from 2 million in 1991-92 to approximately 28 million in 2024-24.

Auto Industry: The Future Ahead

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the country now aims to reach the top position within the next 5 years. Gadkari added India now proudly boasts of the second-largest road network in the world and is steadily advancing in new fuel options such as bio-bitumen and iso-butanol.

The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister called for global partnerships in important innovation areas including but not limited to tunnel engineering, precast road construction, circular economy solutions and hydrogen transport systems.

India Behind Which Countries?

In recent years, the vehicle sales and manufacturing output of India have surged exponentially, positioning the country just behind China and the United States.

Industry estimates suggest that the automobile sector of India supports more than 37 million jobs while also contributing more than 7 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
