Stress Management: Dr. Aditi Nerurkar, a prominent medical doctor, researcher and world-renowned expert in stress and public health has suggested that sitting is as worse as smoking.
Speaking at the Mel Robbins podcast, Dr. Nerurkar said a study of 800 people found that sitting can increase the risk of acquiring diabetes by 112 percent, heart diseases by 147 percent, death by heart diseases by 90 percent and death overall by 50 percent.
Risks if Stress Management isn’t Properly Managed
In another development, Dr. Preeti Gupta, Associate Professor at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, said prolonged physical inactivity can result in a wide range of health conditions including but not limited to diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, hypothyroidismas well as both microvascular and macrovascular complications such as coronary artery disease and stroke. She added that prolonged physical activity has also been linked to certain types of lethal cancers and mental health concerns. Dr. Gupta added it can also increase LDL (bad cholesterol) that can cause cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Mohit Sharma, Senior Consultant, Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Endocrinology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, echoed similar comments. He remarked sitting for more than 6 to 8 hours a day can significantly increase the risk of premature death. Dr. Sharma remarked sitting for more than eight hours a day is linked with an increase of 34 percent in mortality risk while smoking 1 to 5 cigarettes a day can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by approximately 40 to 50 percent compared to non-smokers.
