Breast Cancer Diagnosis-How to Stay Protected?

One of the easiest ways to stay protected against breast cancer is to self-conduct physical examinations and seek routine screenings at your doctor’s office. Girls above the age of 25 and women of all ages must perform monthly breast self-checks. They should look out for any breast lumps, changes in breast shape, colour or texture, or thickening. Those with a family history of breast cancer or women over 40 must go for annual mammograms. This is simply because ignoring symptoms can cause delayed diagnosis and more aggressive treatment.

Early-stage breast cancer can be curable but the disease can progress to advanced stage(s) if the symptoms are overlooked, which can make treatment more difficult, less effective and costlier. For instance, you should look out for symptoms such as nipple inversion, clear or bloody discharge from the nipples, or breast skin that appears red, puckered or scaly. This could possibly indicate conditions ranging from benign cysts to early cancer.

Lifestyle changes such as limiting alcohol intake, avoiding tobacco, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight are highly recommended. It is highly important to consume a balanced diet every day that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
