The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to public welfare by significantly reducing the electricity burden on households across the state. According to a post shared by AAP Punjab, nearly 90 per cent of homes in Punjab are now receiving zero electricity bills, bringing major relief to families amid rising living costs.

The move is part of the Aam Aadmi Party government’s flagship promise to provide free electricity up to a fixed consumption limit, ensuring affordable access to basic utilities. Since the implementation of the scheme, millions of households—especially from middle- and lower-income groups—have benefited from reduced or nil power bills.

The government has maintained that the policy has been executed without compromising the state’s financial health, attributing the success to improved fiscal management and better control over power distribution losses. Officials say the initiative has also encouraged responsible electricity usage while ensuring energy security for citizens.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has repeatedly stated that essential services like electricity should ease people’s lives, not add to their financial stress. The zero-bill milestone is being seen as a key achievement of the Mann government’s pro-people governance model in Punjab.
Additionally, the Punjab government has emphasized that the free electricity scheme is not limited to urban households alone but has equally benefited rural areas, where power expenses often impact agricultural and domestic budgets. Farmers and daily wage families have particularly welcomed the initiative, saying it has helped them redirect savings towards education, healthcare and household needs.
Officials from the power department noted that alongside consumer relief, the state has been investing in strengthening power infrastructure, upgrading substations and improving billing transparency to prevent misuse. The government has also reiterated that industries and high-consumption users continue to pay regular tariffs, ensuring that the subsidy remains targeted and sustainable.
Political observers say the zero-bill achievement has strengthened the AAP government’s image as a welfare-driven administration, ahead of upcoming political milestones. With electricity being a core issue for households, the Mann government’s policy is increasingly being cited as a model of balancing social welfare with administrative efficiency in Punjab.
