In a major crackdown, seven engineers of the Municipal Improvement Trust have been suspended for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices. According to official information, the action was initiated following serious complaints of forced extortion, misuse of official powers, and procedural irregularities in project execution.

The case is linked to an alleged ₹52.40 crore tender scam in Amritsar, which reportedly involved manipulation of tenders and financial misconduct. The government has made it clear that any official found abusing authority for personal or political gain will face strict consequences, regardless of position or influence.

Sources said that the suspended engineers are accused of exerting undue pressure, demanding illegal payments, and causing financial losses to the public exchequer. The Mann government has emphasized that corruption not only harms governance but also increases the “political cost” for honest administration, which the state is no longer willing to tolerate.

The Punjab government has directed further investigation into the matter, and additional disciplinary and legal action may follow based on the findings. Vigilance agencies are also expected to examine the financial trail connected to the tender process.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparent and accountable governance, the Bhagwant Mann–led administration stated that public money will be protected at all costs, and corruption at any level will be dealt with firmly.

The move has been positioned as part of the AAP government’s broader campaign to clean up government institutions and restore public trust in the system.
