Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Anurag Dhanda on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, alleging that the Speaker himself undermined the dignity and neutrality of the विधानसभा (Assembly).
Anurag Dhanda Targets Delhi Assembly Speaker Over ‘Breach of Legislative Decorum’
In a statement shared on social media, Dhanda said that the Speaker “tore apart the sanctity of the Delhi Assembly” by making public comments even before the Privilege Committee had completed its inquiry. According to Dhanda, such actions go against established parliamentary conventions and raise serious questions about the impartiality of the Speaker’s office.

Dhanda alleged that by giving what appeared to be a verdict during a press conference, the Speaker pre-empted the findings of the Privilege Committee, which is constitutionally mandated to examine such matters independently. He said this not only weakens institutional processes but also sets a dangerous precedent for legislative functioning.
“The Speaker’s chair demands neutrality, restraint, and adherence to procedure. Making public judgments before an inquiry concludes erodes trust in democratic institutions,” Dhanda said, adding that the role of the Speaker is to protect the rights of all members, irrespective of party affiliations.
The controversy has added to the growing political tension in Delhi, with opposition parties accusing constitutional authorities of acting in a partisan manner. AAP leaders have demanded that established legislative norms be followed strictly and that the Privilege Committee be allowed to complete its probe without external influence.
So far, there has been no detailed response from the Speaker’s office on the allegations. Political observers note that the issue could further intensify debates around institutional neutrality and the balance of power within the Delhi Assembly.
