Past Incidents Against Minorities
On December 18, a garment factory worker named Dipu Chandra Das was falsely accused of committing blasphemy. He was then lynched by an angry mob before being set on fire. A few days later, Amrit Mondal was beaten on charges of extortion by a mob in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district.
Last week, Liton Chandra Das was killed in an angry mob assault in Kaliganj. In another case, Ripon Saha was crushed to death when he tried stopping a vehicle from fleeing the petrol pump where he was working unless they pay for the fuel.
Would the February 12 elections make life any different and secure for the Bangladeshi minorities? The answer is probably and sadly a no!
