No Compromise on Strategic Autonomy, S Jaishankar Reiterates India’s Foreign Policy Approach, Donald Trump’s Oil Rhetoric Finds No Takers In India?

India’s EAM S. Jaishankar reaffirms that strategic autonomy is central to India’s foreign policy, emphasising that energy and diplomatic decisions are based on national interest.

S Jaishankar, who serves as India’s External Affairs Minister, declared that India uses strategic autonomy as the fundamental principle governing its international relations. He affirmed that India will make its own decisions on national security matters based on its national needs, without yielding to external political pressure or to foreign diplomatic statements.

Strategic Autonomy Remains Non-Negotiable

S Jaishankar declared that India conducts its foreign relations in accordance with its national interests, which are its primary diplomatic objectives. The country maintains international security through its military alliances and power-generation partnerships while protecting its right to make independent decisions.

Energy Decisions Driven by National Interest

Jaishankar explained that India makes its energy choices based on its strategic business needs rather than its political relationships with other countries. The Indian government selects energy sources based on market conditions, cost efficiency, and energy security requirements, rather than following foreign directives.

Donald Trump’s Oil Rhetoric Finds No Takers

Indian officials denied the assertion that former U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration made, which claimed India had stopped buying Russian oil. The Indian government denied any commitment to stop purchasing Russian oil. The Indian government did not enter into any agreements with Russian officials about energy purchases.

Balancing Global Pressures

India maintains strong ties with the West while continuing to work with its historical partners, including Russia. India uses a multipolar approach to international relations to build partnerships with different nations through shared benefits while avoiding situations that force it to choose between opposing groups.

Implications for India’s Global Strategy

Jaishankar’s statements show that India will prioritise its national interests in international relations, trade, and diplomacy.
