Harry Styles opens up about the heartbreaking loss of his friend and former bandmate Liam Payne, revealing how the tragedy changed his perspective on life. Check what he said!

The death of a close friend can change how a person sees life. For singer Harry Styles, the loss of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne became a deeply emotional moment. Nearly two years after Payne’s death, Styles spoke about the experience during an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. The singer shared how the tragedy affected him personally and made him rethink many things about his life.

Payne died in October 2024 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The sudden news shocked fans around the world and left his former bandmates heartbroken.

Harry Styles Opens Up About Coping With Liam Payne’s Death

During the interview, Styles said it was not easy to process the loss. He had to deal with his personal grief while the world also reacted to the tragedy. He explained, “I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way.”

Styles said losing Payne felt especially painful because they shared many similar experiences. Both grew up in the public eye after becoming global stars with One Direction. Remembering Payne, Styles said he was a kind person who simply wanted to do well and make people proud. Those memories made the loss even harder to accept. He admitted, “It was difficult to lose a friend who is like you in so many ways.”

Liam Payne’s Death Made Harry Styles Rethink His Life

Styles also revealed that Payne’s death made him reflect deeply on his own life. The moment pushed him to slow down and think about what truly matters. He said, “I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great,” Styles said. “It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself – OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?”

He also spoke about the pressure celebrities often feel to show their grief publicly. “I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away. And then suddenly being, you know, like aware of there’s maybe like a desire from other people of you to convey that in some way, or it means you’re not feeling what you’re feeling or something, you know?”

Despite the sadness, Styles believes the best way to honour Payne is to live life fully. He said, “And I think the greatest way you can honour your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest. Like super special person and really sad.”

Meanwhile, Payne’s death is still part of an ongoing legal investigation in Argentina. Authorities confirmed that the singer died instantly due to multiple injuries from the fall. Toxicology reports later found alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants in his system.

Earlier, manslaughter charges against three men linked to the case were dropped. However, two men (Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz) are still accused of selling the drugs involved. If found guilty, they could face prison sentences of four to fourteen years.

After the tragedy, Styles attended Payne’s private memorial service along with other former One Direction members at St Mary’s Church, Amersham in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in November 2024.
