Delhi News: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India recently did an audit that showed a disturbing truth about Delhi’s drinking water.
The report says that more than 55% of the groundwater samples tested between 2017 and 2018, and 2021 and 2022 were not safe for people to drink. This is a big problem for water safety in the capital.
More than half of the samples failed
The Delhi Jal Board found that 8,933 of the 16,234 groundwater samples it tested did not meet the required standards.
DON'T MISS
The failure rate ranged from 49% to 63% over the years, which shows that contamination is not only common but also long-lasting.
Serious Health Risks Pointed Out
The report says that using contaminated groundwater could put people in danger of coming into contact with harmful substances like nitrates, heavy metals, and other toxic elements.
This is not only bad for the environment, but it could also be bad for people’s health in the long term.
There are holes in monitoring and treatment
The audit also shows that water management systems have big problems. Some of these are not enough testing systems, weak monitoring, and holes in the treatment infrastructure.
People are also worried about the use of some chemicals in water treatment processes, which could be harmful to health if they aren’t properly controlled.
Trends of Increasing Contamination
The Central Groundwater Board’s earlier research showed that levels of contamination were rising, and some groundwater samples even had uranium in them.
Experts say that if action isn’t taken right away, things could get even worse.
Need for Action Right Away
Delhi News: Activists and experts are calling for immediate action, such as stopping the use of contaminated sources, making filtration systems better, and making sure that people are held more accountable.
The report is a wake-up call for the government to make water safety systems better and protect the millions of people who depend on groundwater for their daily needs.
