Uttar Pradesh News: State Rolls Out AI-Powered Traffic Challans, Will It Tame Lawless Roads?

Uttar Pradesh News: The system would help in taming the lawless roads of the state of Uttar Pradesh where vehicle owners often vehemently ignore or bypass traffic rules.

Uttar Pradesh News: The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department is all set to implement an automated e-detection system to strengthen the enforcement of stringent traffic guidelines via technology. Developed under the framework of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the system would be helpful to identifying vehicles automatically that operate without valid documents. Thereafter, e-challans could be issued to such vehicles’ owners without any form of manual intervention.

This initiative by the UP government is designed to enhance compliance, improve road safety and make enforcement more transparent and faster, especially on high-traffic national highways.

NIC Lucknow has been instructed by the UP transport department to launch the module as a pilot project at Barabanki-Ahmedpur Toll Plaza and Itaunja Toll Plaza. Once successful trials are completed, the system would then be expanded across the state in different phases so more highway corridors and toll plazas get covered.

How Does The System Works?

High-resolution cameras are installed to scan FASTag details and number plates of vehicles in real-time by the system. The data then gets cross-checked instantly with different national databases like VAHAN for verifying the validity of vehicles’ documents.

An e-challan gets generated automatically if the vehicle is found to be operating with missing or expired PUCC, insurance, fitness certificate, registration or permit. The e-challan is directly sent to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner.

In the first phase, the automated e-detection system would verify insurance validity, pollution certificates, registration documents, high security registration plates and fitness certificates. Checks for non-transport vehicles would include PUCC, HSRP compliance, declared non-usage status and registration validity where applicable.

The system would help in taming the lawless roads of the state of Uttar Pradesh where vehicle owners often vehemently ignore or bypass traffic rules. This would also help in curbing down the incidents of reckless driving, over-speeding, wrong side driving and blatant signal jumping.
