Fatty liver is becoming one of the most overlooked health issues in urban India today. A Delhi-based doctor has raised concern after revealing that nearly 61% of adults in cities may already be suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease without even knowing it. The biggest danger is that it often develops silently, showing almost no clear warning signs in the beginning.
Dr Saleem Zaidi, in a video on his YouTube channel Healthy Hamesha, explained that the disease is far more common than people assume. He highlighted that most individuals only discover the condition when it has already progressed. In severe cases, it can lead to liver cirrhosis, where liver tissue becomes permanently damaged.
He also explained that fatty liver happens when fat accumulation in the liver crosses 10% of its total weight. There are two types: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, linked to lifestyle factors and alcoholic fatty liver disease, caused by excessive alcohol intake. The non-alcoholic form is more widespread due to rising obesity, poor diet, diabetes and insulin resistance.
According to the doctor, FL does not develop overnight. It slowly builds up in the body while remaining unnoticed, which makes early awareness extremely important.

5 Early Warning Signs Of Fatty Liver
Dr Zaidi shared five key symptoms that may indicate fatty liver at an early stage:
- Constant fatigue and weakness
Even after proper sleep, people feel tired, low on energy and mentally unfocused. This happens because the liver fails to convert nutrients into usable energy efficiently. - Discomfort on the right side of the abdomen
A dull heaviness or pressure under the right ribs may appear, especially after oily meals. This is where the liver is located. - Poor digestion and bloating
Frequent acidity, gas, bloating, or constipation can signal reduced bile function, which affects fat digestion. - Increasing belly fat
Fatty liver is strongly linked with central obesity. A growing waistline, even in otherwise normal-weight individuals, is a major warning sign. - No symptoms in early stages
In many cases, FL shows no visible signs at all, making it even more dangerous if ignored.
Why Early Detection Matters
The doctor stressed that fatty liver should never be ignored. Routine tests like SGOT, SGPT, cholesterol, triglycerides and fasting sugar can help detect problems early. These tests are simple but crucial for prevention.
He added that this is not a condition that “shouts” for attention. Instead, it develops quietly over time. This is why awareness is the strongest tool for prevention.
Lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, and reduced sugar intake can significantly reduce the risk. Early action can prevent long-term damage and serious complications.
