Before Main Hoon Na, Saif Ali Khan And Shah Rukh Khan Were Expected To Team Up For THIS Blockbuster Film – Here’s Why Kartavya Actor Got Replaced!

Saif Ali Khan was first considered for Devdas before losing Main Hoon Na role offered by Shah Rukh Khan. Here’s the untold story.

Saif Ali Khan has revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes story from the early 2000s that has now become a hot topic among Bollywood fans. The actor recently shared that Shah Rukh Khan had personally approached him for a “great part” in the 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na. However, the collaboration never happened because director Farah Khan eventually decided to go in a different direction.

The revelation came during Saif Ali Khan’s recent interview with Bollywood Hungama while promoting his new Netflix film Kartavya. Speaking about the missed opportunity, Saif recalled how excited Shah Rukh Khan was while discussing the role with him. At the time, the two actors had already impressed audiences with their chemistry in Kal Ho Naa Ho, and many expected them to reunite on screen once again.

According to Saif Ali Khan, things changed quickly after Farah Khan stepped in. Recalling the moment, the actor said Farah directly called him and told him, “No, no, no, listen…” because she believed the character required someone completely different.

Although Saif did not confirm which role he was being considered for, fans strongly believe it was Lakshman “Lucky” Prasad, the rebellious younger brother of Shah Rukh Khan’s Major Ram Sharma. The role later went to Zayed Khan and became one of the memorable parts of the film.

Saif Ali Khan Also Missed Out On Devdas

Interestingly, Main Hoon Na was not the only major Bollywood project that slipped away from Saif Ali Khan during that era. Years before that, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali had reportedly considered Saif for the role of Chunnilal in Devdas.

The character eventually played by Jackie Shroff became one of the standout performances in the film. Industry reports suggest discussions between Saif and Bhansali did take place, but the collaboration failed to materialise because of scheduling issues and differences regarding the interpretation of the role.

At that stage in his career, Saif Ali Khan was trying to move beyond his romantic hero image and was carefully selecting projects that could reshape his position in the industry.

How Dil Chahta Hai Changed Saif’s Career

Even though Saif lost some big projects, he also gained career-defining films during the same period. One of the biggest turning points came with Dil Chahta Hai in 2001.

Director Farhan Akhtar reportedly considered several actors for the lead trio before finalising the cast. Different combinations featuring Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan were discussed before Saif Ali Khan was locked for the role of Sameer.

The film completely changed Saif’s image in Bollywood. His comic timing, charm and effortless performance connected strongly with younger audiences. Dil Chahta Hai not only became a cult classic but also revived Saif’s struggling career after multiple box-office disappointments in the 1990s.

Saif Ali Khan Now Seen In Kartavya

Saif Ali Khan is currently receiving attention for his latest Netflix release Kartavya, which premiered globally on 15 May 2026. Directed by Pulkit, the Hindi-language crime drama has been produced by Gauri Khan under Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment banner.

In the film, Saif Ali Khan plays SHO Pawan Malik, a police officer caught in a dangerous web of corruption, caste-based violence and political pressure after a journalist is attacked during a protection mission.

The thriller also stars Rasika Dugal, Sanjay Mishra, Zakir Hussain and Manish Chaudhari in important roles. Kartavya marks another intense performance from Saif, who has increasingly moved towards darker and more layered characters in recent years.
