CM Yogi Adityanath: In a major infrastructure boost for Uttar Pradesh, the Central Government has approved the ₹7,145 crore Kanpur-Kabrai Highway project, a move set to transform connectivity across the Bundelkhand region. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the 117.7-km greenfield corridor on Wednesday.
What Is the Kanpur-Kabrai Highway Project?
The approved corridor is a 117.7-km access-controlled, four-lane greenfield highway connecting Kanpur with Kabrai in Mahoba district. It will be built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll basis and forms a critical link in the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor.
Travel Time Set to Drop from 3.5 Hours to 1.5 Hours
Engineered for speeds of 80-100 kmph, the new highway will more than halve travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai, from the current 3.5 hours down to just 1.5 hours.
A Boost for Industry, Jobs and Regional Trade
The highway will connect 16 major economic nodes, including the Unnao, Banther, Pankhi and Chakeri industrial areas, along with the Trans Ganga Integrated Township and Kanpur Nagar Node. Key project highlights include:
- Nearly 1.2 crore person-days of direct and indirect employment expected during construction
- Enhanced access to rail hubs at Kanpur, Ghatampur, Hamirpur and Mahoba, plus Kanpur, Chakeri and Khajuraho airports
- Projected daily traffic of around 18,069 passenger car units by FY2028
- Stronger links to the Kabrai mining belt, easing transport of minerals and industrial goods
