Rajya Sabha Reward For Leaving Mamata Banerjee, Joining BJP, Didi’s Ship Sinking?

Former TMC leaders joined the BJP and were immediately named as Rajya Sabha bypoll candidates, triggering a fresh political debate in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee: The former Rajya Sabha members of the TMC Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik have left the TMC to join the BJP. As soon as they did that, the BJP declared these people as their Rajya Sabha bypoll candidates, which has created controversy regarding whether it was a reward for leaving the TMC or not.

Major Political Turnaround in West Bengal

A big political turnaround has taken place in the state of West Bengal, as the former Rajya Sabha members of the Trinamool Congress party, namely Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik have quit the TMC and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 

Why Have These Politicians Quit Mamata Banerjee’s Party?

The resignation of Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik from the Rajya Sabha and the TMC happened in June due to their questioning the leadership of the party after its loss in the West Bengal assembly elections. 

BJP Announces Rajya Sabha Tickets

Soon after joining the BJP, Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik were declared the BJP’s candidates for the July 24 Rajya Sabha by-polls. 

Why did they join the BJP?

After joining the BJP, Sushmita Dev appreciated the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and added that the double-engine government system has changed the face of many states. 

BJP Calls It an Exceptional Decision

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya welcomed Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik into the party and described their induction as an “exceptional” decision rather than a change in the BJP’s overall policy on admitting former TMC leaders.

Mamata Banerjee: The back-to-back developments have intensified the political battle in West Bengal. While critics claim the Rajya Sabha nominations are a reward for leaders leaving Mamata Banerjee’s party, the BJP says the selections are based on experience and merit.
