Finally! Aamir Khan Clears Biggest ‘3 Idiots’ Myth, Says Phunsukh Wangdu Was Never Based on Sonam Wangchuk, Reacts to Hunger Strike

Aamir Khan has finally cleared the long-standing myth that 3 Idiots' iconic character Phunsukh Wangdu was directly based on Sonam Wangchuk.

Sonam Wangchuk: The actor who played 3 Idiots‘ popular character, Phunsukh Wangdu, has finally debunked one of the myths regarding the movie after years of speculation.

Aamir Khan Ends the Long-Running Speculation

At a recent talk show, Aamir Khan mentioned that even though many people tend to assume that Phunsukh Wangdu is a representation of Sonam Wangchuk, this character is actually the result of an amalgamation of multiple ideas and personalities. This is why, according to Aamir, the film creators wanted to depict an innovative personality who questions the existing educational system. It should be noted that Aamir Khan recognized Sonam Wangchuk as an inspirational figure in the realm of education and innovation; however, there is no doubt that his appearance in the film triggered this misconception.

Reaction to Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike

Aamir Khan also reacted to the hunger strike carried out by Sonam Wangchuk, expressing his concern and admiration for his dedication towards the movement. He stated that Sonam Wangchuk has always been working for the betterment of people and had raised some important questions that need to be answered.

Why Did the Myth Persist for Years?

Speculation grew stronger after the success of 3 Idiots in 2009. As the conclusion of the movie showed Phunsukh Wangdu as an outstanding innovator living in Ladakh, it resembled Sonam Wangchuk’s activities in the field of education and sustainable technologies too much for many fans not to make the assumption. Even though Rajkumar Hirani and other members of the cast had already clarified that question in the past, it persisted in the audience’s minds.

A Debate Finally Put to Rest

With Aamir Khan’s latest clarification, one of Bollywood’s longest-running debates has finally been addressed. While Sonam Wangchuk remains an admired education reformer and innovator, Aamir made it clear that Phunsukh Wangdu was a fictional character and not a direct representation of him.
