The Central Government is expected to introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The proposed legislation aims to extend legal protection to “Vande Mataram,” India’s national song, by introducing penalties for its deliberate insult or obstruction.

If approved by Parliament and enacted into law, the bill would place “Vande Mataram” under protections similar to those currently available for the National Anthem. The proposal reportedly includes punishment of up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both for individuals found guilty of intentionally insulting the national song.
Proposal Heads to Parliament
Government sources say the move is intended to reinforce respect for national symbols and strengthen existing legal provisions related to national honour. Supporters of the proposal believe it will promote patriotism and discourage acts considered disrespectful to the country’s cultural heritage.
The bill has not yet become law. It must first be debated and passed by both Houses of Parliament before receiving Presidential assent. Until that process is completed, the proposed penalties are not legally enforceable.
The announcement has generated widespread public discussion, with supporters welcoming stronger safeguards for national symbols while others are expected to debate the scope and implementation of the proposed law.
As Parliament prepares for the Monsoon Session, the Vande Mataram Bill is likely to become one of the key legislative issues to watch.
