The Bhagwant Mann government has announced a development programme involving more than ₹750 crore for the holistic development of 3,763 villages where the Scheduled Caste population exceeds 40 per cent.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced the initiative during a review meeting of the Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Department, with the programme aimed at promoting balanced rural development across the state.
₹20 Lakh Initial Funds for Each Village: Bhagwant Mann
Under the programme, each identified village will initially receive ₹20 lakh in untied funds. The allocation can be increased after proper utilisation of the initial amount and assessment of additional development requirements.
Deputy Commissioners will identify and prioritise works according to the specific needs of individual villages. A Specific Village Development Plan (VDP) will also be prepared for each village to ensure that the funds are used for need-based development.
Focus on Basic Infrastructure and Civic Amenities
The funds can be utilised for essential infrastructure and public amenities based on local requirements. These may include RO water systems, additional classrooms, libraries, ambulances, Mohalla Clinics and solar-powered street lights, among other facilities.
The Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Department will serve as the nodal department for the initiative, while the Rural Development and Horticulture departments will provide support.
Government Focuses on Inclusive Rural Development
The Punjab government said the programme is intended to ensure that villages with a significant SC population receive greater attention in development planning.
The initiative is being positioned as part of the state’s broader focus on social justice, equal opportunities and improving civic infrastructure in areas identified as having development needs.
