The police also detained the woman against whom the TMC complaint was filed after the incident. Whereas the TMC complaint named her as Tannishtha Saha, the police identified the detained woman as 38-year-old Anusua Saha. Kolkata Police said there was a scuffle outside the chief minister’s house but police statement also described it as a scuffle and did not independently verify the reported knife attack. Officers said the appropriate legal steps were being taken. The matter has led to debate over the woman’s entry to Banerjee’s office and if security protocols were sufficient. The exact events leading up to the scuffle and the claim that a knife was used are still being examined.
Why is the Kalighat incident raising security concerns?
The report on the alleged incident has put the focus on the security of political leaders in the state and raised speculation as to how a scuffle could happen in close proximity to Banerjee’s home even when she was under the cover of Z-plus security. But that by itself cannot establish the overall safety scenario throughout West Bengal. For a wider picture, verified information about crime trends, safety and other reported incidents across the state would be needed. But at present the priority is on the police probe, the allegations being levelled by the TMC and the situation that led to the clash in Kalighat.
