Crude oil prices tumble as global markets recalibrate global crude oil prices wipe out months of gains, globally energy prices, inflation, and oil importers including India will come under the spotlight. The correction in the benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude prices could go some way in offering some respite to consumers and companies but only for as long as it persists.Indian consumers and policymakers are likely to shrug off a small and persistent fall in prices, since India relies heavily on imported crude to supply energy needs.
Crude oil retreats after powerful rally
Crude oil prices fell on Monday, October 26, after trading near six-month highs in the previous week. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures declined to about $101 a barrel and Brent was down to about 114-115. The slide came after an impressive rally fueled by worries over possible disruptions to global oil supplies. Brent crude had surged roughly 6% in the previous week, while WTI was up close to 2.3% in the week. The markets are now comparing the potential for a respite from the US and Iran tensions to the potential for more Middle Eastern turmoil. While diplomatic efforts have brought some reprieve, concerns around regional security are still seen to be affecting oil prices.
What’s behind the drop in WTI and Brent prices?
The oil market has responded to shifts in sentiment regarding the geopolitical situation and crude supplies. There has been a relaxation in near-term worry as diplomatic reports regarding Washington and Tehran warming have helped pull prices away from recent highs. But that decline may not mark a long-term easing of supply issues worldwide. Focus on energy targets and transport routes has remained high, with the Saudi-backed government in Yemen warning of more strikes on the kingdom. Riyadh said on the weekend it shot down more missiles and drones from the Houthis, who said they had hit their targets.

Can India benefit from falling crude oil prices?
The recent decline is an answer to India is import dependent country as it imports mostly the crude oil to meet its requirement of energy resource. So, for the India, Oil prices are important. Countries that import oil stand to gain when the cost of oil decreases and stays low for a period of time. A decrease in oil price means governments and consumers in these countries may pay lower cost on oil imports, all other conditions being the same. But the advantages are not guaranteed.
Will petrol and diesel prices fall in India?
But the big question consumers will want to ask is will we see a decrease in petrol and diesel prices if the price of crude oil is to fall. Decreases in global benchmarks do not always immediately translate into lower fuel prices at the fuel stations. Retail petrol prices also depend on refiners margins, taxes, dealer commission and decisions of the oil marketing companies. As crude prices further slide and remain lower, it could take the pressure off fuel prices. But a small dip may not be enough to give a retail price a lift.As a result, consumers will have to continue monitoring international oil prices and fuel-price rulemakings before they might see relief at the gas station.
Where could crude oil prices go from here?
The price of crude will have a volatile future, with geopolitical factors expected to influence the direction of the market.A significant easing of regional tensions and fewer interruptions in the transport of oil could see prices fall. But new strikes on energy facilities, shipping disruptions or an escalation of the conflict could see prices turn around again. There are also fears that ongoing supply risks could trigger another price rally.
