45 Electric Vehicles: The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai has stated that it will replace its current lineup of fossil fuel-powered vehicles with 45 electric vehicles. This is a part of the airport’s efforts to encourage sustainable mobility across the nation, according to the airport that was recently crowned “Best Sustainable Airport of the Year.” As part of its Operational Net Zero mission, CSMIA wants to replace all of its combustion-powered cars with electric vehicles by 2029.

Electric Vehicles at CSMIA
The goal of Operation Net Zero is to lessen the airport’s negative environmental effects. In addition to the 45 EVs already on the market, the CSMIA intends to deploy 60 additional EVs over the course of the upcoming fiscal year, including ambulances, forward command posts, security vehicles, and utility vehicles for airside operations and maintenance. Vehicles fueled by internal combustion will gradually be replaced as well. Additionally, the CSMIA intends to work with airport stakeholders to transition to EVs.
What did the official say about the move?
According to a CSMIA spokesperson, “With every green program that the airport initiates, it brings us a great sense of delight to be able to contribute to the aviation industry’s journey towards attaining a sustainable future. It is a great honour for CSMIA to be achieving key milestones that indicate the reduction of carbon emissions under its Environment Social and Governance (ESG) policy commitments. As a responsible airport service provider, CSMIA strives to reduce its impact on the environment. Switching to electric vehicles will help to reduce carbon emissions, thereby lowering the airport’s carbon footprint. CSMIA takes pride in its vision and mission to create an ecosystem that is centred to fast-track its journey towards carbon neutrality.”
It is estimated that the installation of 12 EV charging stations throughout the airport will cut the emissions of greenhouse gases associated with transportation by about 25%. Last but not least, the airport has made it clear that it is totally dedicated to lowering its carbon footprint and that it will keep making efforts in this direction.
