UP Govt’s Bold Move! Waives Off Registration Fees and Road Tax for EVs, Propels State Towards Sustainable Mobility

Uttar Pradesh: The government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, announced on Friday that registration fees are no longer required for any electric vehicles (EVs) purchased there. The government also announced that it has decided to eliminate road tax on EVs purchased and registered in UP for a period of three years until October 2025 in a notification that puts the state’s EV policy on track.

UP Government’s New Policy for Electric Vehicles

In addition, the exemption on the purchase of EVs made in the state itself will be good for five years. According to the notification from UP principal secretary L Venkateshwar Lu, the exemption is valid for any electric vehicle (EV) bought and registered in the state of Uttar Pradesh from the date of notification of Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, 2022, dated October 14, 2022, until October 13, 2025.

State and Central Government Incentives to Lower Prices of EVs in UP

“A 100% rebate will be given on EVs manufactured, sold, and registered in the state in the fourth and fifth years of the effective period of the Electric Vehicle Policy notified on October 14, 2022, i.e. from October 14, 2025, to October 13, 2027,” it added. The RTOs of all the districts have received orders from the government to ensure that the directives are followed immediately. A definition of “electric vehicle” has also been provided in the notification, according to which “EV” refers to any vehicle with an electric motor that is powered by batteries, ultracapacitors, or fuel cells.

UP’s Electric Vehicle Policy Accelerates Sustainable Mobility Future

All two-, three-, and four-wheeled vehicles, as well as strong hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV), and fuel cell electric vehicles, fall into this category (FCEV). 15% Subsidy off Factory Price for EVs Purchased in UP

In addition to the central government’s subsidy for the purchase of electric vehicles, the state of Uttar Pradesh has also granted an exemption. Together, the Central Government’s and the State Government’s relief measures will lower the price of electric two-wheelers by between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 on the road and by up to Rs 1 lakh for electric cars. With the new policy in place, there will be no longer be a difference between the registration fees for EVs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh; instead, the rates will be the same in both the state and the capital. The policy states that electric vehicles purchased in UP will also receive a 15% subsidy off the factory price.
