Google Pixel 7 Pro review: This phone surely belongs to the new generation, people who love AI

Google Pixel 7 Pro review: Following closely behind Apple’s most recent iPhone release, Google’s flagship Pixel smartphone has made a triumphant comeback to the Indian market after a more than two-year absence. With the Pixel 7 series, which includes the Pixel 7 Pro, Google made the audacious assertion that they would be the best smartphones available this year. The best phone, not the best Pixel or Android device.

It’s a big boast coming from a business with troubled beginnings in its hardware ambitions. But it demonstrates that Google is betting a lot on the new Pixel 7 Pro, the pinnacle of what the company has to offer right now.

Similar to old phones

The Pixel 7 Pro, like previous Pixel phones, has one advantage over competing smartphones in that it stands out from the crowd. The three cameras are held in place by a large metallic hump on the back, while the overall design appeal of the Pixel 6 or 6a series is retained.

Google Pixel 7 Pro review: Bigger than before

But unlike prior Pixel phones, neither the Pixel 7 Pro nor the Pixel 7 are actually “small” devices, which is something I particularly regret. The new Pixels are large and wide smartphones that feel like glass slabs in your hands, even without the metallic strip on the rear. In that regard, holding a Pixel phone is extremely similar to holding a Samsung Galaxy S Ultra. They are obviously expensive, but they are heavy to carry.

Even the smaller Pixel 7 isn’t well suited for one-handed operation, but considering Apple dropped the “Mini” from its lineup this year, one-handed operation may already be history.

Better software and AI

In contrast to Apple, Google continues to prioritise software and artificial intelligence (AI) over all other considerations. The camera offers a “cinematic blue” feature that functions very similarly to Apple’s video cinematic mode. In this mode, the programme automatically blurs the background while attempting to identify the subject.

On paper, it gives your videos a dramatic appearance, but both Google and Apple will need some time to develop this option. The Pixel 7 Pro’s version similarly performs poorly in crowded areas, and in most cases, skilled video editors are required to get any useful results from this feature.

Camera

Other camera features shared between Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and the Pixel 7 Pro are also identical. Similar to the iPhone, the main sensor’s image is cropped in the 2X zoom mode to create a 12MP shot. Additionally, the camera includes preset options for up to a 5X zoom, but you can zoom even more.

But the camera is no longer the main focus of Pixel phones. They concern Google’s new Tensor chip, of which the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 both include an upgraded version. The new chip powers the entire camera’s software, and you can tell that Google takes software seriously because the camera will ask you to update the app if one is due when you’re taking a picture.

Faster than before

Everything should be faster thanks to the Tensor T2 chip, and it probably is. But it’s difficult to discern that distinction. I upgraded from a Pixel 6a to a Pixel 7 Pro, and this phone’s AI functions are all equally as quick as those of the earlier model.

Still available at any time, Google Assistant. In fact, there have been moments when I’ve noticed the Assistant attempting to speak to me even when my phone is in my pocket and I’m chatting to someone else and say “Google.” These AI functions are far from flawless, as I noted in the Pixel 6a review that came before this, but Google is demonstrating that it is moving ever-closer with the Tensor processors and new Pixels.

Resons to buy this futuristic phone

Live Translation, Magic Eraser, and other truly cutting-edge software capabilities are all there in the Pixel 7 Pro. You believe that this is how the future ought to be when these features function. When speaking to a foreigner on the phone, I should be able to do so in our respective native tongues as the phone effortlessly translates our exchanges. But we simply aren’t there yet.

With these phones, Google is promising that AI will one day govern your smartphone, just like it did with the Pixel 6a or the majority of Pixels before it. The software promise, however, presents some challenges for investors. No one would blame you for being hesitant to buy if you included the fact that Google doesn’t exactly have a solid background in the hardware industry.

Price

The Pixel 7 Pro, meanwhile, is hitting a respectable pricing range for flagships at 84,999. Compared to a Samsung Galaxy Flip 4, I prefer its camera. Today’s flagships appear to be primarily early adopter gadgets. After all, it will be at least a year before the iPhone’s Dynamic Island is actually useful, and Samsung’s foldables need a lot of work before they can be considered “functioning” gadgets. A promise is also made by the Pixel 7 Pro, which is more reasonably priced than the most expensive Samsung or iPhone models.

The Pixel 7 Pro is undoubtedly one of the best phones available, if not “the best,” even if hardware faults don’t surface months down the road.
