The Supreme Court of India has officially closed the legal case filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against Patanjali Ayurved over alleged misleading advertisements. The case claimed that Patanjali’s ads made unverified health claims and disparaged modern medicine, sparking widespread debate across the country.

He said, “itni unchi vidya itni hui badi virasat hai apne rishiyon ki. humne iski dor to itni unchi uda rakhi thi kyunki iski dor to hamare bhagwan ji ke haath mein, rishiyon ke haath mein hai. lekin yeh jahan humne uda rakhi thi, itni unchi patang kiski? yog, ayurved ki. kuch log kaatne mein lage pade the. Details About The Case
The case against Patanjali had earlier led the Supreme Court to impose a temporary ban on the company’s advertisements. Contempt proceedings were also initiated against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna for continuing to air ads in violation of prior court orders. During the hearings, Patanjali issued multiple public apologies, which the court accepted, ultimately leading to the closure of the contempt case.
This legal matter was also linked to a broader regulatory shift. In July 2024, the Ministry of AYUSH removed Rule 170 from the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, which required state-level approval for advertisements of Ayurvedic, Siddha, or Unani medicines. The Supreme Court had temporarily stayed the deletion to maintain the approval requirement. However, on August 11, 2025, the court lifted the stay, noting that once Parliament lawfully removes a rule, the judiciary cannot reinstate it.
In its final orders, the court clarified that the main relief sought by the IMA had already been granted through previous judgments. It also allowed parties to approach a High Court if they wished to challenge the removal of Rule 170, marking the end of a five-year legal journey for Patanjali.
