Can a Machine Achieve Nirvana? Anthropic explores AI consciousness with a Hindu monk

Anthropic has brought religious scholars, including Hindu monk Swami Sarvapriyananda, to discuss AI consciousness and ethics for its Claude model. The talks raise a bigger question: can a machine be conscious, let alone attain nirvana? Experts remain uncertain.

Can a machine ever reach nirvana? The question sounds like science fiction, but it is now part of a real conversation. AI company Anthropic has been working with religious thinkers to explore what its Claude chatbot is and how it should behave.

Who Attended the Gathering

Anthropic convened scholars, clergy and ethicists from more than 15 religious and cross-cultural traditions at its San Francisco headquarters. They included Indian monk Swami Sarvapriyananda, who later publicly confirmed that Anthropic flew him to California for the discussions.

Why a Vedanta Monk?

Sarvapriyananda specialises in Advaita Vedanta, the non-dual tradition linked to the Upanishads and Shankara. He has also spoken about where consciousness meets neuroscience, physics and AI, including the difference between intelligence and consciousness. He said Anthropic’s researchers seemed excited and alarmed about where AI is heading.

What Anthropic Discussed

Co-founder Christopher Olah reportedly told participants that models can display behaviour resembling human emotions and personality, which is why a strong moral compass matters from the start. One attendee, Rabbi Abraham Navon, felt researchers spoke about Claude less like software and more like a possibly conscious entity deserving moral consideration.

Anthropic’s Public Position

The company’s published constitution for Claude admits uncertainty about whether the AI has some kind of consciousness or moral status. Anthropic also runs an internal model welfare team. In 2025, it let Claude Opus 4 and 4.1 end certain conversations, saying it is deeply uncertain about Claude’s moral status.

So, Can a Machine Attain Nirvana?

Nirvana, or moksha in Hindu thought, is liberation for a conscious being. So the first question is whether a machine has any inner experience at all. Researchers warn that fluent conversation is not proof of consciousness, and there is no scientific agreement on the answer.

The Bottom Line

For now, the monk’s visit shows that tech companies are turning to ancient philosophy for hard questions. Whether a machine can feel, suffer or be liberated remains open.
