Income Tax News: Last Chance ! CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline, Follow These Things In Case Portal Issues Arise

The CBDT’s proactive step is a relief for taxpayers still struggling with portal issues. However, the short one-day extension means individuals and businesses must act quickly.

Income Tax News: The Central Board of Direct Taxes has given taxpayers a much-needed break by extending the deadline for filing their Income Tax Return for the Assessment Year 2025-26 by one more day. This decision comes after several people reported technical problems with the e-filing platform.

Due date One More Day Added

The original deadline for filing ITRs was July 31, 2025; however, it has already been pushed out to September 15, 2025. The CBDT has now pushed back the deadline to September 16, 2025, because the site is having problems.

The Income Tax Department published an official announcement on social media to confirm the news regarding the portal issues and deadline extension for ITR filing:

“Due to a technical snag on the Income Tax e-filing portal, CBDT has extended the ITR filing deadline to September 16, 2025.

What to do in case of portal issues

Taxpayers facing portal access issues are advised to clear their browser cache, try incognito mode, use updated browsers, or switch networks. Please file at the earliest to avoid last-minute hassle. For assistance, contact their helpline.

Time for Maintenance Announced

The department also let taxpayers know about a planned maintenance window on the e-filing portal between 12:00 AM and 2:30 AM on September 16, 2025. People have been told to avoid the last-minute rush during this time and to arrange their filing accordingly.

What Taxpayers Should Do

The one-day delay is a pleasant break, but experts say you should file as soon as you can to minimize stress at the last minute. Here are some quick tips:

Check to see if the portal is open: Try to go to the gateway while it’s not busy.

Get your papers ready: Make sure you have Form 16, bank statements, and proof of investments on hand.

If you need to, use offline tools: The Income Tax Department lets you file your taxes offline, so you don’t have to rely on the portal as much.

Get professional help: If the problems keep happening, talk to a chartered accountant or tax advisor.

Why This Is Important

Every year, a lot of taxpayers have problems since the portal gets a lot of traffic right before the deadline. The CBDT’s action is meant to take some of the stress off the system and make sure that real filers don’t miss out because of technological problems. If you miss the deadline, you could have to pay late fees under Section 234F, as well as interest on the tax you owe.
