Income Tax Return Due Date News: Last Chance for Non-Audit Taxpayers, Deadline September 15

This deadline applies specifically to individuals and taxpayers whose accounts are not subject to audit.

Income Tax News: The last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) is now set as September 15, 2025. This deadline applies specifically to individuals and taxpayers whose accounts are not subject to audit. The government has extended the deadline earlier this year to provide relief to millions of taxpayers.

Last Chance for Non-Audit Taxpayers, Deadline September 15

However, with just a few days remaining, the pace of ITR filing remains slow. As of September 7, 2025, over 13.35 crore individual taxpayers are registered on the Income Tax portal, but only 4.89 crore ITRs have been filed, and around 3.35 crore returns have been processed and verified so far.

They raised concerns over system glitches

Several professional bodies, including the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FKCCI) and Chartered Accountants Association, Surat (CAAS), have urged the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to further extend the deadline. They raised concerns over system glitches, delays in utility updates, and mismatches in Form 26AS, creating difficulty in timely filing.

Despite these challenges, the CBDT has not announced any further extension. Taxpayers are therefore strongly advised to file their returns by September 15 to avoid penalties or interest for late filing.

For those whose accounts are not liable for audit, the government expects compliance by the deadline to ensure smooth processing of refunds and avoid unnecessary complications.
