The two leaders reviewed progress across political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people cooperation, and welcomed the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, held in Moscow on August 24, which covered trade, investment, energy, nuclear power and skilled-worker mobility.
Peace as a Recurring Theme
Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward for resolving global conflicts, reaffirming India’s support for peace efforts in Ukraine and stressing that moving from endless war to an end of war is essential for humanity’s wellbeing. Putin has previously briefed Modi in detail on the Ukraine conflict during earlier meetings.
Maritime Safety Takes Centre Stage
A notable part of the discussion focused on how the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region have disrupted maritime trade and threatened the safety and security of Indian seafarers, an issue of direct concern given India’s reliance on sea routes through these volatile regions.
Looking Ahead to BRICS in Delhi
The leaders also discussed India-Russia engagement in multilateral forums, particularly under India’s BRICS Chairship for 2026. Modi confirmed he looks forward to hosting Putin in India for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, with both sides describing the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership as resilient despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
