A series of game-changing reforms have been announced by the Modi government to improve workplace safety and social security for dock workers.

New Labour Laws: The Indian Government recently announced the new labour reforms.

How Will the New Labour Laws Impact Dock Workers?

Under the new labour codes, a series of important changes have been made for dock workers. This includes all dock workers to receive formal and legal protection and formal recognition.

Moreover, appointment letters will be now made mandatory so dock workers can receive guaranteed social security benefits. Also, the government has now made it mandatory for dock workers to receive employer-funded annual health check-ups.

In addition to these benefits under the new labour reforms, dock workers can now access mandatory medical facilities, sanitary, washing areas, first aid, etc. to ensure safety and decent work conditions.

Why Previous Governments Ignored Such Measures?

Previously, the governments were never bothered about the safety, workplace conditions and social security benefits of dock workers. Despite repeated reminders by trade unions, Central Governments of the past keep ignoring or delaying reforms for the betterment of dock workers.

New Labour reforms for Export Sector Workers

The government also announced that export sector fixed term workers will now receive provident fund, gratuity and other social security benefits. Also, each worker can now avail annual leaves after 18 days of work in a year. Moreover, each worker will be entitled to receive timely wage payment with no unauthorized wage deductions and wage ceiling restrictions. Furthermore, women will now be allowed to work in night shifts with consent so they get sufficient opportunities to earn higher income.
