8th Pay Commission Update: Fitment Factor Likely to Boost Salaries of Central Government Employees

If implemented, the revised fitment factor could bring a significant hike in basic pay, directly benefiting lakhs of employees and pensioners across India.

Central government employees may soon receive good news as discussions around the 8th Pay Commission gain momentum. Reports suggest that the government is examining ways to revise the pay structure of its employees, with the fitment factor expected to play a key role in determining the salary hike.

8th Pay Commission Update: Fitment Factor Likely to Boost Salaries of Central Government Employees

Currently, under the 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor stands at 2.57. This means the basic salary is calculated by multiplying the existing pay with this factor. However, employees have long demanded an increase in the fitment factor to 3.68, which, if approved, could lead to a substantial rise in salaries. For instance, a central employee earning a basic pay of ₹18,000 could see their pay increase to over ₹26,000 with the revised factor.

This makes the move significant for millions of households dependent on government salaries

The 8th Pay Commission, once officially announced, will benefit not only serving employees but also retirees, as pensions are also linked to the fitment factor. This makes the move significant for millions of households dependent on government salaries.

While the government has not yet issued a formal notification, experts believe that the new commission may be introduced before the 2026 general elections, making it a timely step to address inflation and cost-of-living challenges faced by employees.

The final decision will depend on recommendations from the finance ministry and subsequent cabinet approval. Until then, employees continue to hope that the 8th Pay Commission will bring much-awaited relief through a fair and transparent pay revision.
