Act now: end child labour: World Day Against Child Labour day

Around 100 nations around the globe marks the World Against Child Labour every year on 12th June. According to studies, about one out of every 10 children globally is compelled to work.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

World Day Against Child Labour 2021 theme:

Act now: end child labour – is the theme of this year’s World Day Against Child Labour. This is the first time in nearly two decades, the world has seen an increase in child labour and millions more are vulnerable due to pandemic situation. According to a report released by the ILO and UNICEF on global trends and estimates, the progress to end child labour has stalled reversing the downward trend that saw it fall by 94 million between 2000 and 2016.

World Day Against Child Labour 2021 significance:

As countries are slowly heading towards the new normal despite the pandemic, it is important to raise awareness and eradicate child labour completely.

Going by the census of 2011, 259.64 million children belonged to the age group of 5-14 years of which 10.1 million were child labourers as per a Hindustan Times report.

From the manufacturing of firecrackers in Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi city to bangle-making industry or working in roadside eateries, child labour exists in parts of the economy.
