Amid corona-virus lock-down users of US were spending many hours each day on tiktok.
Now after India, the US government may ban Chinese video sharing app Tiktok. US sighting national security threat as a reason to ban Tiktok .
Tiktok is owned by Byte-dance, Chinese company.
Approximately 75 million users active during lockdown in US.
Tiktok has 175 million downloads in US and more than 1 million users worldwide.
Mike Pompeo, secretary of state says that administration is certainly looking at banning Chinese social media apps . He further claims that Tiktok is a security threat and they shares users data with Chinese government.
When a reporter asked Pompeo, if he would recommend people to download tiktok,
He says “only if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese government “.
“Every Chinese technology company is required by Chinese law to provide information they obtain, or information stored on their networks, to Chinese authorities if requested to do so. All Americans should be concerned that their images, bio-metrics, location and other data stored on Chinese apps must be turned over to China’s state security apparatus upon request” says State department.
“Tiktok is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy here in the U.S. We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users. We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked ”, says spokeperson of tiktok.
Meanwhile Tiktok says they will remove Tiktok from Hong Kong.
“In light of recent events, we’ve decided to stop operations of the TikTok app in Hong Kong,” says a TikTok spokesperson.
