AIFF ban by FIFA: SC directs Central government to take steps to lift ban

There has been a stir in the sports world ever since FIFA suspended the All India Football Association (AIFF). Due to this suspension, the hosting of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in India has also come in danger and now the Supreme Court, Government of India has come into active mode in this matter.

The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to take swift action in removing this suspension and take the lead in the matter.

The hearing in the matter related to AIFF was held in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, in which the Supreme Court has been informed by the Central Government that the Sports Ministry is in constant touch with FIFA and efforts are being made to resolve the matter.

The matter was heard in the Supreme Court by a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Central Government, has informed the court that the Sports Ministry has held a meeting with FIFA, some things have progressed and discussions are still going on.

During the hearing, Justice Chandrachud said that the country should get the benefit of the tournament (U-17 Women’s World Cup). Right now only our focus should be on solving this matter. The Supreme Court has now advised the central government to resolve the matter at the earliest, as well as adjourning the hearing till next Monday (August 22).

The top court heard the case a day after FIFA suspended India’s top football body for “undue influence from third parties” and said the U-17 Women’s World Cup “cannot currently be held in India as planned”. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said that the government has already held talks with FIFA following the suspension of AIFF.

“On the request of SG Mehta, we ask Centre to take pro active role to hold the U17 World Cup and lifting of the suspension of AIFF be facilitated,” the Supreme Court said.

Why did FIFA take action on India?

The All India Football Association (AIFF) looks after all the work of football in India. FIFA says that right now there is complete interference of third parties, FIFA will suspend India until its constitution is implemented in it.

Due to the suspension of FIFA, there is a cloud of doubt over the Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup to be held in India in October-November. Because FIFA has written in its order that as long as this suspension remains in force, this tournament will have to be shifted to some other place.

Elections have not been held in AIFF for a long time, Praful Patel has been its chairman for the last 12 years. After the intervention of the Supreme Court, the operation of AIFF was given to a committee and Praful Patel was removed from the post. However, FIFA also considers this to be a third party interference, which is why now the central government has taken things at its level.
