Army called in to help as floods ravage parts of Bangladesh

Six million people are affected by the continuous rain and floods in Bangladesh. In the wake of this natural disaster, the country has called the army for help, relief and rescue work.

According to official estimates, about six million people are affected by floods as water infiltrated houses and many people are staying in temporary camps as water levels continue to rise in rivers in the country’s north-east and northern regions.

A spokesperson of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) said, “Water level in two of the country’s four major rivers is much above the danger mark and the situation is almost like the 2004 floods.”

People had to take shelter on the terraces, although later with the help of boats they were taken out. No official data is available so far in relation to how many people have died due to the floods. According to unofficial figures, at least 19 people have died in the country.

The FFWC attributed the floods to incessant rains in the higher reaches of Meghalaya and Bangladesh. Flood waters have flooded several power stations, forcing the administration to shut down these power stations, resulting in the shutdown of internet and mobile phone communication. Earlier, Bangladesh has called the army to help the administration.
