B D Mishra takes oath as second Lt Governor of Ladakh

On Sunday, Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra took the oath of office to become the second Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, succeeding Radha Krishna Mathur, a former IAS officer who held the post for more than 27 months after the area became a Union Territory in 2019.

On February 12, the President of India approved Mathur’s resignation and appointed 83-year-old Mishra as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

At a special ceremony at the Raj Niwas in this city, Mishra, a former governor of Arunachal Pradesh, was sworn in by Justice N Kotishwar Singh, Chief Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Mishra’s appointment warrant as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh was read out by advisor Umang Narula, according to officials.

They said that senior officers of the police, army, and paramilitary forces as well as Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and chief executive councillors of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development councils, Tashi Gyalson (Leh) and Feroz Khan (Kargil), among others, attended the event. Later, the Ladakh police gave Mishra the guard of honour.

Mishra retired from the Army on July 31, 1995, after a long tenure that lasted more than 33 years. On October 3, 2017, he was appointed governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

He was the leader of the NSG counter hijack task group and was acknowledged by the Prime Minister for his part in putting an end to the hijack situation on April 24, 1993, at the Raja Sansi Airport in Amritsar by taking out the hijackers and rescuing all 124 passengers and crew members in a secure manner.

The sudden relocation of Mathur was not explained, but it occurred at a time when the people of Ladakh were agitated in favour of their many aspirations, including complete statehood and protections for the territory under the sixth schedule of the Constitution.
